What to expect in your first session
Your first counseling session is called an intake. This is your chance to meet your therapist, get
comfortable, and begin building a trusting relationship. It’s also an opportunity for your therapist
to learn about you—what you’re struggling with, what brought you to therapy, and what you
hope to change.
Many people come to therapy unsure of what the experience will be like. Feeling nervous,
overwhelmed, or uncertain is completely normal. Jake’s goal is to help you feel at ease,
understand the process, and feel supported as you begin this meaningful—sometimes
intimidating—journey toward healing and a more fulfilling life.
During your intake session, you’ll talk about:
-
Your family background
-
Education and work history
-
Medical and mental health history
-
Any current medications
-
What you want to focus on in therapy
Near the end of the session, Jake will help you identify your initial goals for therapy. Some goals
are clear right away; others develop over time. You’ll also receive an overview of what future
sessions will look like and schedule your next appointment.
After Your First Appointment
Most people leave their first session feeling hopeful and encouraged. Jake will often give you a
simple exercise or reflection to work on during the week to help you prepare for your next
session.
In ongoing sessions, you’ll learn and practice skills that support your goals. Therapy is for you,
and Jake’s role is to guide you, introduce helpful tools, and support you as you explore your
thoughts, emotions, and experiences. You decide what feels most important to talk about each
week, and Jake will help you navigate both the uncomfortable and overwhelming moments that
naturally come with growth.
Therapy isn’t always easy. You may experience strong emotions like anxiety, frustration, or
sadness along the way. Healing, overcoming obstacles, and learning to live with difficult
thoughts and feelings takes courage and effort. Jake is here to walk with you through that process
and help you move toward healthier living and the rich, meaningful life you’re searching for.
